How To Grow a Comedy YouTube Channel

Today I´m going to talk about how you can grow a comedy YouTube channel and capture the attention of an audience with your funny videos.

Although the competition is tough nowadays there are tons of examples of people succeeding on the platform on an everyday basis.

So, why can´t that be your case too? If you want to learn HOW to actually do it then keep reading…

1. Let Yourself Loose

As you´ve probably noticed, since YouTube it´s been for a while now, the platform tends to make people “instantly” famous as it gives crazy amounts of exposure to those who know how to grab people´s attention and keep them engaged through several minutes.

Although it is something remarkable as it´s something you can do for yourself with zero cost if you are willing to put in the work, it´s not as easy as it might sound.

YouTube is a very personality-based type of network, and if you combine that with the fact that comedy also relyies on personality and performance you know you HAVE TO let yourself loose.

What do I mean by that?

You should try to be yourself and make people laugh as if you were performing for a small audience or as if you´re in a friends meeting.

Now, that doesn´t mean you can´t script lines or make a crafted sketch/character, it just means that this is the proper mindset you want to have in order to approach things correctly.

Here´s how:

Try to do what makes YOU laugh…

…that way you´ll always feel comfortable by saying or performing your own truth, and not what you may think others expect from you. Period.

2. Craft Attention-Grabbing Titles

It´s fair to say that is probable that you already know you have to put in some work on your thumbnails, right?

Okey then, I want to give you some tips on how you can make the most out of your video snippet in order to make people click every-single-time.

If you want to stand out and take advantage of the YouTube´s algorithm then you NEED to master CTR, aka Click Through Rate.

Increased CTR = more views = increased exposure

The number of clicks you get when your video appears on the featured videos section matter, it tells YouTube that your content is relevant to certain queries and therefore it´ll try to make it stand out for several searches.

Although most people tend to focus on Thumbnails (which is also KEY) I want you to get better at making eye-grabbing titles, not only cool images.

There are a few simple ways to do that:

  • Use power words – You can use words that elicit an emotion or make people react in a certain way. It could be something as simple as using words like “crazy”, “stupid”, “dumb”, “insane”, etc. You get the idea.
  • Simple & bold – Another thing you can try is (what I like to call) the PewDiePie method, which is making a bold statement with uppercase letters in a short sentence. Something like:

It works because it´s different (and simple) compared to what most people do. Combined that with a funny thumbnail and you got yourself and effective CTR optimized video.

  • Make it stick – If you really want to make your title memorable then you can give it a funny, not descriptive, name. I like “cannibalistic cookbooks review” or “gangsta coloring books”. You won´t use those exact phrases but the point is to be creative, using a part of your sketch/script might be a good idea.

3. Check Out What´s Trending

Another great way to get started on the right foot as a newbie is to leverage the power of Google Trends as well as YouTube´s trending feature.

If you combine those two you´ll get more than enough data to craft a few ideas for your next video.

It even organizes trends by category

In addition to that, you´ll not only get inspiration to make a funny video but you´ll also get the upper hand by knowing that is something that people are actually looking for.

So, make sure to take advantage of this and use it to get greater exposure, especially if you want to increase your subscribers count.

Now, if you don´t want to make an entire video about any of the current trending topics on the internet then you should consider adding some of them to your next scripts.

Why?

Well, YouTube now understands what´s being said on every video as if it was text from a blog post.

So, if someone searches something related to a trending topic the platform might suggest your video just for the simple fact that you´ve mentioned that same topic on your footage.

4. Write Down Your Script

Yep, having a script at hand, whether is a nice bullet point list with some good ideas or a detailed sketch you´ve written to be said word-by-word, helps a lot.

You don´t want to rumble on a single idea on camera and improvise too much on a single topic because your viewers will bounce right away and that will result on decreased audience retention numbers.

Descreased audience retention = less exposure as a feautred video

You should try to write something down before your shooting starts, having some sort of an idea of what you want to say or talk about is not enough nowadays.

You have to get people´s attention and keep it for as long as you possibly can.

5. Choose The Right Gear

Make your audio crisp and clear. Period. The end.

You shouldn´t focus too much on your camera gear or what tripod to use unless you´ve already invested in the right audio equipment.

Now, that doesn´t mean that you need to spend tons of money to get the best audio quality, it just means that you have to set it right.

How?

You can use a lapel mic. Yep, that´s it.

It´s cheap and it is effective. Exactly what you need to get going!

People are not going to care whether if your video is 720p or 1080p (unless it looks really bad 🙁) but they are certainly going to bounce if they can´t hear you clearly when you speak.

That bein said, the better your video production settings the better results you´ll get, BUT if you had to choose between having cristal clear audio or an HD footage then go with your sound.

Also, lapel mics are crazy affordable and I think it is the least you can do to improve your video´s quality and get your audience to actually enjoy watching your content.

6. Effective Use Of Bloopers

Do you want to get more subscribers? Maybe increase the number of views you get from each video? Okey then USE BLOOPERS!

If you end up your video with a few bloopers once the viewers gets to the end by using the End Screen feature that the platform provides you can dramatically increase the number of subs you get from each video you upload.

So, do not delete the footage from every time you screw up or forget a line, you can create a mix of funny clips with it and have it on auto play on the last 20 seconds of your video with your subscriber button on the right…

…or you can directly copy the layout of Brain Dean´s, the SEO expert, videos.

Like this:

Make sure to take advantage of your bloopers and get the most out of the end screen feature as it will make your subs go up liek nothing else does!

7. Leverage Third Parties

Another common option you have to get more done and get better results while making funnier content is to get collaboration from others.

You could make friends participants on your videos or simply ask them to film you while you do your “thing”.

Now, this doesn´t mean that you can´t also work with other YouTubers within your niche to promote your channel as long as you share similar audiences with that co-creator.

In addition to this, getting help to have original ideas by asking people, aka friends and family, what they´d like to watch on comedy video might by great idea.

The bottom line?

Get some help (whatever it might be) from your close ones to get your channel started as fast as you can.

8. SEO All The Way

As you might know, if you´ve been reading on this blog for a while, I absolutely love SEO and what you can do with it if you know how to use it properly.

In case you don´t know what it is SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which is (very simply said) creating content in such a form that it ranks on search engines like Google or YouTube.

Now, if you are trying to rank for almost ANY keyword on YouTube you have to do some SEO in order to increase the odds on your favor as a small channel.

Here are three things you can do to properly optimize your videos:

  1. Improve your descriptions – First off, you should make your descriptions 200 to 300 words long and describe what your video is all about as well as add some of the keywords you want to be found for.
  2. Steal tags right! – By using apps like VidIQ or Tube Buddy you can easily steal some of the similar tags your competitors are using on their videos so that you show up as a next video suggestion next to theirs.
  3. Focus on watch time – Finally, focus on your audience retention numbers as well as your total watch time. Make your video fun to watch , engaging, and LONG, at least 7 to 10 minutes longs.

9. Make It Stick

Last but not least, make your videos memorable and get people head over to your channel over and over again.

Here´s how: create a personal brand around your passion!

By branding yourself you make your videos instantly stand out and differentiate from your competitors.

You don´t need to get fancy or create an expensive looking logo to build a brand, just use some of the common (but effective) principles branding teaches.

For example, you can think of a cool slogan you can say on every video, choose a font for your thumnbails or a specific lay out that you consistly use on every piece of content you make, upgrade your channel art, or make a nice channel trailer.

The goal is to make it easy for people to remember you and what you´re all about.

¡BONUS TIP!

I wanted to finish with a bonus for those who have read this far, and that is that you should follow YouTube´s Creator Academy advice, as it is from the platform itself and it´s 100% FREE!

In fact.

They give some great tips that are specially created for you to have long-term success on the platform.

You can find awesome advice related to your shooting, scripting, how to properly monetize your channel with ads and even how to make money beyond ads.

Keep in mind that the better you do and the more money you make they also grow with you, so follow their advice and stay on track.

I hope this information has helped you and that you start making cool and funny videos that people love to watch over and over again! 😉
