How To Be a Daily Vlogger

Today I´m going to talk about how to be a daily vlogger and not burn out in the attempt.

The notion itself appeard not so long ago and nowadays has become the norm for many YouTubers out there.

Now, there are a few things you should consider even before you start to walk this path. Let´s review one by one.

1. Make a Hit List

Yep, one of the first steps you should take in order to start a successful daily vlog is to plan and do some research ahead of time.

You don´t want to come up with brand new ideas every single day becuase there´ll be bad days when you simply don´t want to or feel like it.

Instead, it´s far better to brainstorm when you feel inspired or when you are relax and want to get creative, THOSE are the best days to come up with, what I like to call, a hit list.

If you that you´ll be able to keep up with your daily vlogging routine and not burn out in the process.

Plus! by doing this, you´ll probably get better ideas for videos than if try to force them out every day before shooting. At least that´s been my experience.

The bottom line?

Every time you feel productive, energized, and/or creative take advantage of it!

Each and every one of us has had that kind of days (or times of the day), so… make the most out of them.

2. Use Proven Video Templates

If you are trying to come up with video ideas but you are unsure whether they´ll pay off or not, then THIS is the next step to take.

You can easily get proven video ideas that have a higher percentege of success as they´ve been tested by others.

Here´s how:

You should go to other YouTuber´s channels and list “most popular” videos from competitors that are within your niche or industry.

You´ll be able to see what are their best videos, what are they talking about in those videos, the format they´ve used, how it´s edited, compared them to other videos that haven´t been that successful, etc.

If you do just that with enough competitors you´ll get a curated list of proven videos with topics and styles to get ideas from to make your own content and add them to your hit list!

Although it sounds simple (because it is!) it´s incredibly effective. Try it!

3. The Art Of Storytelling

Another thing that most successful vloggers tend to master over time to make their vlogs much more compelling to watch is the skill of storytelling.

No matter what type of videos you make, how are your editing abilities, the way you craft a story, how you compose your shots, and how you actually narrate what´s going on matters more than you think.

So, in order to make your storytelling skills improve overnight, or at least for the time being, here are a few common principles every storyteller should know and apply.

  • Start the story in the middle. One great way to capture your audience attention is to start your story in the middle, avoid putting your viewers to sleep by following the exact chronological order of events, and making them wait too long for the A-HA moment they´ve been waiting for.
  • Don´t brag, instead, relate. You don´t want to seem like a “know it all” kind of guy/girl, nobody (and I do mean nobody) likes that. But, more importantly, nobody will relate to that, and you want people to relate with you in order to engage with your content. Instead, show your vulnerability, share your mistakes and pitfalls, be human, and people will appreciate it.
  • Keep it simple but add flavor. You should follow the typical arch of any story (intro, middle, and end) but add some extra flavor to it. You want to follow the right pattern but elicit emotions through conflict and tense or uncertain situations you may deal with.
  • Finish with a takeaway. Finally, people LOVE to get something out of every story, a lesson, an insightful tip or advice, something that relates to them and can be of use for their own lives. So, finish off with a simple yet powerful takeaway people can found helpful and/or useful.

Of course, there are many other thins you can do to improve the story behind every vlog but if you try to make some of these a part of your videos you´ll be already way ahead of any beginner out there.

4. Edit With The End In Mind

As one of the best selling books of all times “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” says, you want to start with the end in mind.

Now, when it comes to editing, this is a key habit to take in as it will affect the way you think your shots, what you say or not say, what you want to show, and/or what´s the message of the video, if any.

You can improve your editing skills much quicker if you know what are you aiming for.

Whether you want to simply entertain, motivate, or educate, you should make your vlogs interesting, dynamic, and compelling to watch through editing.

Now, there are lots of great tutorials out there to begin with, and you don´t need to use the last updated version of Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro, but you should do the best you can with what you have.

One last tip I would give you is to learn about in-camera transitions, as it is a great simple way to improve your videos without even doing much when you sit down to edit. (and with capabilities that any editing software has)

Here´s a great video you should watch:

5. Keep Things Simple

You don´t want to be caught up by paralysis by analysis, so avoid overthinking your shots.

Although these tips and advice can certainly help you to improve your vlogs and keep up the rythim if you doing it on a daily basis you want to master the basics, which are not more than a handful.

For example, once you´ve done a hit list of video ideas to work with you shouldn´t start thinking of story boarding your shots, or planning ahead of time exactly how you want your clips to look like, you should grab your camera, hit record, and start trying different things.

That being said, improving throughout the process of your system (meaning the steps you follow to create a new vlog) is always a great idea.

Another important thing I see lots of people overthink is gear.

You shouldn´t, let me tell you why.

You can always recreate an old video idea once you bought that high-quality camera you always wanted, or any other gear you can possibly think of.

6. Be Attentive

You can make an entire video, or even parts of it, from daily life situations, if you are attentive and make good use of them.

So, try to be in the look out for interesting circumstances that may sourround you and use them well.

If you are going to a friends meeting or you are going out you might want to take your camera with you, don´t plan, just take it and be attentive.

It is not the common tip and it might sound a bit weird for some of you but I promise, it does help to improve your footage if you are in the look out, it does pay off.

7. Take a Break & Detach

Last but not least, if you feel like you´re stuck or just can´t come up with new good ideas to work, just take a break and detach.

You shouldn´t try to force an idea or a video, instead aim for quality, create something that you actually like and want to create.

Nowadays, compeition is higher and higher as more and more people start their own YouTube channels, so one way to keep creating good enough content that actually has the opportunity to stand out is by doing quality work.

Therefore, in order to maintain both effectiveness and efficiency is to take a break, relax, and detach for a while, think of something else, or nothing at all, watch Netflix, do whatever it is that you want to do and relax.

I´ve found that when I experience writer´s block one of the best things I can do is to relax for a while and detach myself from the situation 100%.

Then, when I go back to it, I´m much more productive.

BONUS: (Closely) Follow Top Creators

Here´s a bonus for YOU!

If you´ve read this far I want to congratulate you and give a last piece of advice I´ve myself foud helpful over time.

If you want to get cotinuous inspiration to keep up with your vlogs and make them better you should always try to find others that are doing better than you.

Those who have many more subscibers and views, that have mastered the art of making awesome looking videos, and seem to have everything figured out.

Why?

Because you want to stay humble and learning, that IS the point actually, you want to get better and challenge yourself at every step of the way.

Now, when I say follow top creators I mean actually breaking down their path, their most popular videos, finding the patterns of their success (because there is one, trust me), thumbnails, how they talk, what they talk about, how they edit, etc.

If you that and aim for that type of mindset you´ll always make the best video possible at any given time, and with time, you´ll get so much better.
