How To Start a Fashion YouTube Channel

In this post, I´m going to show you how to start a fashion YouTube channel and get a wider audience with your videos.

In fact, these are some of the tips many content creators have also applied to their own channels to get to the level where they are now.

Without further ado, let´s dive in.

1. Amplify Yourself

Whatever it is that you´ll talk about you HAVE TO amplify yourself.

This means that you have to put 110% (if not more) whenever you are in front of the camera.

Your overall energy tends to be perceived as low and unresponsive once you capture footage through the lens, so you need to act out a little bit.

Now, this is something you must measure yourself, how much or how little depends on each individual, but the point is to not be boring and/or speak too slowly as people will click off very quickly.

People´s attention span is only getting shorter and one way to attract attention is fast and confident movement and speaking.

This doesn´t mean that you have to fake or act like a different person, just try to put yourself in the best mood possible, smile, and give your best effort, most times that will suffice.

2. Niche Down, At First

The second step you should take when starting out as a fashion content creator on YouTube is, at least at first, niching down.

If you get discovered by new viewers you will want them to know EXACTLY what they´ll get if they subscribe to your channel.

It is not only a matter of branding but also a great way to focus your content on specific topics that have been underserved within the platform.

Long-tail keywords, searchable keywords that you can rank for and be easily found by potential subscribers will double if not triple your growth.

Niche down, target very specific searches people type on YouTube and that don´t have high-quality videos that answer them.

Here´s a great example:

What you can see on this example is that instead of “how to apply lashes” which will bring up high-quality videos with millions of views and that you´ll find is quite hard to rank for as a brand new YouTuber I´ve made a search for a specific brand “how to apply lash boost” and the very first and second place are for really short videos, and the second one it´s been shot with a phone!

This is what I mean by niching down, the opportunity is there, you just need to take it.

3. Quality Over Quantity

A very important question most YouTubers have made to themselves from time to time is whether to post more content by sacrificing a bit quality or reduce the number of videos but producing high-quality content only.

The truth is that there are examples for both ends, and you can choose between one of those strategies, or you can do what some of the top content creators have done.

Find the right balance, but keep quality on top.

Here´s why?

There are more and more examples of channels that upload videos once a month, if not less than that, but they produce such high-quality content that their fanbase keeps growing no matter what.

I´m going to give you two great examples of this.

The first one is Parker Walbeck channel, who is a filmmaker that has made a name for himself in a very competitive industry by working with great brands like Sony, Huawei, Canon, among others, and produces ONLY great content once (sometimes) twice a month.

In fact.

He has grown hundreds of thousands of subscribers with just 70+ videos!

You can check it out yourself:

That´s like an average of 10k new subs per video!

And if you take the time to watch some of his videos you´ll see that he´s done a great job at providing lots of value to his community, for FREE, and has done just that on each video he has created.

Another great example of this is Experimental Fun, whose latest video has more than 11 months old, and if you check out the dates of his previous videos you´ll see they are pretty much spread out with months apart.

However, this doesn´t affect, at all, his growth, and his videos have (literally) millions of views.

Clearly, they are very GOOD!

On the other hand, and I don´t want to mess up with your head with this but, it is also important that you know that quantity matters too.

You can watch this video from Tim Schmoyer and Evan Charmaicel to see what do I mean by this:

The bottom line?

YOU are the one that has to find the right balance for your channel.

Bear in mind what I´ve shared with you and try to make the best with the time you have available, ultimately you can try both approaches and see what works best for your particular situation.

4. Right Social Media Sharing

As you may already know, sharing your videos on social media can improve your view rate as well as your subscriber base.

But sharing your videos on each platform the right way will, not only, promote even further growth but will also grow your social media account that much more.

The way it works is simple, Facebook wants you to stay on Facebook, they don´t want to promote a post that links to a YouTube video so that people click off because they want to see it on a different platform.

Plus, when you want to check out a YouTube video that´s been linked to on a Facebook post you need to tap on it and the page takes forever to load because it shows in an external mobile web page.

Instead, what you MUST do is share portions of your videos, let say one or two of your best tips, and directly upload those clips as native content.

THAT is the secret!

Facebook will promote your content much more, 10x more according to Forbes (source), and that will make people curious about you and your channel and won´t be able to resist to check out your channel.

And this doesn´t only work on Facebook, you can pretty much do the same thing on each social media platform you want.

5. Benefit From Proven Video Ideas

Another great tip you can benefit from is using proven video ideas or templates.

What do I mean by that?

Well, it means that you can get some inspiration for some of your next videos from some proven successes that other fashion channels have made.

Plus, it is a super simple process!

Here´s how it works:

First, you go to one of your favorite YouTube fashion-related channels and click on the “videos” section.

Then, you simply sort by “most popular” videos and the platform will show the most viewed videos to the date in respective order, like this:

Now, don´t stop just at the titles and topics used in these videos, go deeper, analyze the way the person talks, how´s the thumbnail design, the way the video has been shot, etc.

You can easily come up with a bunch of ideas by doing this that you can then apply to your own channel and improve your growth rate very quickly.

6. Take Advantage Of Personal Branding

If you take the time to deconstruct and analyze what the most successful fashion-related YouTubers are doing you´ll find some of these exact tips applied to their marketing strategies.

One of which would be personal branding.

They work hard on their image, using the same principles that have leveraged the success of brands like Nike, Apple, and Microsoft.

For example, check out this channel:

They have chosen colors, fonts, have a great channel trailer in place, consistent branding that shows in every platform you can think of, and have even selected the specific audience they want to talk to, women over 40!

That´s what I call effective personal branding!

And that is one of the (many) reasons why this channel has amassed more than 200k subs and will keep growing exponentially over time.

Now, let´s talk about how you can do the same.

Here are some personal branding tips you can use to look like an expert:

  1. Provide Value First! You want to build relationships and trust with your viewers, your brand is basically your reputation, especially online, so make sure to provide value first instead of asking people to subscribe to your channel, like any of your videos or do whatever it is that you want them to do.
  2. Embrace Imperfections. Show your authentic self, embrace your imperfections and don´t try to make it look like you have everything in control, people don´t relate to that. In order to be seen as unique and original, you have to share some of your mistakes as well as being truthful about who you are.
  3. Target Your Audience. Third, think of who your audience, if you target everybody you´ll end up reaching nobody, try to come up with a draft, a simple yet some specific idea of what your fans are. Like the example above, women over 40, so it doesn´t need to be really specific, just a bit. 😄
  4. Develop Consistency. Be consistent with your branding, practice what you preach and be true to your word, don´t say or do things because you think your audience might like that, be YOU. Also, this concept applies to brand design, but more on that in a second.
  5. Brand Design. Colors, fonts, style are also very important. Give it some thought and try different looks until you find one that you really like. The way your branding looks gives a certain feel so don´t underestimate it, hire a graphic designer if you need to, it´ll be a worthy investment you´ll appreciate for years to come!

7. SEO Your Way Up!

That´s right, you can SEO your way to the top of the YouTubers that make millions of dollars in revenue and have hundreds of thousands of fans.

How?

Well, applying the best SEO practices in the best way you possibly can.

Now, in case you never heard of it, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, which pretty much means optimizing content to improve your search engine rankings, whether that is for Google or YouTube.

There are specific tactics and strategies you NEED to implement on your channel in order to get discovered and grow organically if you want to reach a broader audience.

Here´s what you should do:

  • Work On Your Thumbnails. Although it sounds super obvious there´s a lot of people that work really hard on their videos but don´t pay enough attention to the thumbnail, and that´s because they don´t understand how important it really is. A good thumbnail increases your CTR (Click Through Rate), which is the number of clicks you get per thousand or more impressions whenever one of your videos appears on people´s feeds. If you get enough clicks your videos will get promoted by YouTube, if you don´t they´ll sink, it´s that simple!
  • Target Searchable Keywords. Aim for keywords that people actually search for and make a better video than the rest of your competitors, period. If you happen to love vlogging about your fashion likes and dislikes that´s great, but your videos won´t be found unless you provide some value to the viewer, and that can be done by answering some of the searches people usually make on YouTube. Here´s how: go to the search bar, type your idea for a keyword, and add a “*” to see what comes next, check out for long-tail keywords like this:

The longer the phrase and more specific the content the easier it´ll be to rank.

  • SEO Your Channel. That´s right, you can also apply SEO to your channel, let me tell you how. First, write and/or optimize your About Us section by adding keywords you want to be found for, whether that is “fashion”, “fashion trends”, or whatever that may be. Second, create a channel trailer or choose one of your most popular videos to work as a trailer to attract more subscribers. And finally, create playlists that compile related video topics and that can easily improve your watch time, which will also improve your rankings.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know what you have to do I want to hear what are your thoughts.

These tips only work if you take action and apply them consistently and thoroughly, this is not a set-and-forget strategy, you have to try them out and adjust, improve, adapt.

I really hope this information has helped you!

Have a nice one.
