Is Video Production That Important On YouTube?

A good example of video “quality” to the max, (YouTube channel ideas for guys).

Although there are many YouTubers that would say you don´t need any fancy gear to get started I´m not one of them.

You and I know it is not 2014 anymore, and videos are only getting better and better in terms of gear equipment and production value, so… what can you do?

THAT is what I´m going to talk about on this post, so let´s begin!

What Does YouTube Say?

Firt off, lets start with the official approach to video production.

If you go to Creators Academy and begin to go through the courses that have been created for newer YouTubers you´ll find that most of the process about making a video involves a lot of previous (and afterwards) work that does not involve, at all, a costly video production set up.

In fact.

YouTube states that things like creating great content for your fans, growing a community of like-minded people, and aiming for long-term success on the platform should be prioritized over any fancy camera.

If you browse through the catalog and take some of the courses you´ll find there you can see it yourself:

For example, when it comes to creating great content they put a lot of focus on creativity, planning, finding your niche, and simply shooting on your mobile device rather than lighting and the resolution of your camera.

Take a look:

So, as you see, there are a few things that are much more improtant than just your background and how sharp your image actually is.

Content is still King, and it possibly always be, so if you can create something that helps people out, educates them, informs, or simply entertains you can succeed on YouTube. Period.

There is not much than that to it.

Now, if you really want to get after it, then make sure to focus on the creative process of your videos, writing a nice script, targeting your audience, being relatable, asking the audience to submit ideas for future videos, and things like that.

The bottom line?

No, video production it´s not that important, however, there are a few things you might want to look into if you want to make better videos with high-quality content and without losing video production value.

Professional Video On a Budget!

Okay, now you know that video production is actually not that important, however, there are minimum requirements when it comes to recording a YouTube video.

For example, there is one truth most content creators say on their videos and that is:

“most people can forgive poor video quality, but they won´t tolerate bad audio” – Sean Canell (Think Media).

So, chances are you have a phone or you can borrow one, and since most phone nowadays have great cameras built-in them, you can pretty much start recording right away.

Now.

The ONLY thing I would encourage you to do is to grab your headphones and attach it however you can to your t-shirt so that you can speak directly into the mic and obtain much better audio quality.

So, if you are on a budget but you still want to look sharp on your videos then here´s what you can do:

  • Use natural light by filming outside or simply recording your videos near the biggest window you can find. Sunlight is the best source of light you can get as it is at 5600 Klevin, which gives the perfect neutral white balance to your shots.
  • Learn to use your phone and grab those headphones to record audio, don´t use the built-in mic of your phone as it will capture too much nosie and it will sound really bad. Invest in a lapel mic if you can, there are super cheap yet quality options.
  • Finally, try to clean up your room if you choose to film in there, you don´t want to distract your audience from YOU and what you have to say to the world.

There you go, you´ve covered all the four basics of video production, camera, sound, light, and background.

Now, you just need to get started, shoot, and begin the editing process to polish the final product!

Pro Editing Tips & Tricks

Although B-rolls are super important you´ve probably heard all about them, and it is key that you shoot b-roll footage or that you have available b-roll shots to use for your videos.

Another great way to make engaging scene on your videos is to use a montage.
