So you want to learn how to effectively promote your YouTube channel on Twitter, right?
Okay! Then you´ve found the right place, to begin with, and apply these highly practical steps to start off on the right foot.
Let´s go.
1. Make Use Of Native Content
If there´s one thing that can make or break your overall growth strategy on Twitter as a YouTuber is the way you use your content and repurpose it across all your social media.
In case you didn´t know (or noticed from other creators) native content ALWAYS outperforms any other form of content, whether we´re talking about Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc.
Why?
Simply because every social media network wants to keep people on their platform. Period.
This means they dislike posts that send traffic to other platforms, like YouTube, therefore those posts usually get buried.
So, how you can change this and get better results? Utilizing native content, the right way!
Here´s how:
You should use a 30 to a 60-second clip from the original video that you´ve uploaded to YouTube and post it as native content on Twitter.
You want to use something that can be watched on its own but still makes people curious about the rest of the video.
You´ll get a spike in traffic as social platforms tend to promote native content more than anything else, for example, “original” Facebook posts get 10 times more views than posts that directly link to YouTube.
Plus! video posts on Twitter have grown incredibly fast in the last few years, and are still growing! (Video On Twitter)
According to Twitter itself, videos are 6x more likely to be retweeted than photos, and 3x more than posts with GIFs.
Now that you know that there are studies to back this up and that Twitter itself has stated that video is kind of a big deal you HAVE TO take advantage of this.
The bottom line:
By using clips from your videos create a short preview of what viewers will get if they subscribe to your YouTube channel and encourage people to do so on the post. That´s it.
2. Hand-Craft a Good Bio
Your second step in order to get the most out of your Twitter account is to write a good bio.
The goal is to get people curious about you and your content and make them click on your YouTube channel link.
Now you are probably thinking… “but, how does a good bio look like?”
Let me show you.
First, you want to make it long, Twitter limits the number of characters to 160 and people want to use exactly that number in order to get their message across.
That being said, according to Mention´s research the best length for your bio section is around 90 characters long.
They have found that, on average, accounts with around 91 characters have the most followers.
One thing that caught my attention is the fact that they did not find ANY correlation between hashtags in your bio and higher number of followers.
In fact.
The opposite was true, the less hashtags on the bio section the more followers accounts had.
So, now that you know the importance of writing a good bio and how some little changes can affect the way it performs on Twitter let´s make your own.
First, you want to introduce yourself, who you are with brief statements, and try to show some personality by using your own words.
Then make sure to SEO optimize it by using relevant keyword you want to be found (and known) for.
Finally, let the disclaimers to the end, use hashtags wisely, and add a call to action so that your followers know what to do if they want to learn more about you and what you can offer to them.
3. Keep On Track!
One of those KEY metrics that not many people talk about is the number of posts per day you should be putting out in order to get “discovered” all day long.
There are a few studies you should look into in order to get a better idea of what you´ll get depending on the number of tweets you send every day.
For example, according to Buffer research, you should post 3 times per day, as engagement starts to decrease after the third tweet.
That being said, the Fast Company also did their own research and found similar results, but…
…that was measuring engagements rates like the number of retweet per post, responses, and likes.
So, what they have found is that if you want to bring the most value out of every tweet you send you should keep it between 3 to 5 posts per day.
On the other hand, if you want to drastically increase the total number of retweets and exposure you get with your account overall posts, not measuring performance of every single tweet, then you NEED to post more than that.
As you can see on this chart:
Now, you might be thinking, it is hard to put out that many tweets and original pieces of content each and every single day while you are going about your life, right?
Well, although there´s some truth to that, nowadays you have available super powerful software that allows you to schedule your posts ahead of time and plan for the next couple of days, weeks, or even months.
Therefore, in order to keep your posts up to date and make sure you don´t neglect your social media account you should consider using softs like Buffer or Hootsuite to schedule your videos and tweets.
They are fairly easy to use and you can keep track of the performance of every tweet you send, select the hour and date, preview what the post will look like, and many other available features.
Plus! They have a FREE option available you can try if you are unsure, of course, the number posts are limited, but if your goal is to send 3 to 5 tweets per day to have the highest engagement possible per post then you should go for it.
4. Be Present & Engage
You probably heard a million times already that you have to engage with your audience in order to build a long-term relationship with them, right?
Well, it´s 100% true!
In order to be seen and recognized it´s not enough to put out some good content, yeah, that might get things rolling but to stay on track and grow a massive viewership on YouTube you HAVE TO interact with your fans.
The more comments, likes, and retweets you get the faster you´ll grow.
That´s what top creators like Gary Vaynerchuk preache:
In this article, as well as on his website, social media accounts, and YouTube channel, he talks about the importance that responding to people has nowadays.
In addition to that, you´ll be seen as trustworthy and people will surely like to support you and learn more from you, just by simply showing that you care.
That´s why one of the most effective ways to get a larger audience and gain trust is hosting chats so that you can talk to your fans, but more on that later.
You should be aware of what people is saying and respond to comments so that you generate greater feedback once you start growing your numbers.
Most people tend to underestimate the fact that there is a real person on the other side of every comment you get, you should appreciate and take the time to respond as it is a clear signal of social engagement, which Twitter takes in consideration.
In short:
Respond to EVERY comment you get, engage with your fans, show that you actually care, and take the time to listen to your audience.
5. Understand Your Analytics
Another important aspect of Twitter, as well as any other social media platform, is to dive into your numbers through Analytics reports.
If you want to be able to grow as a brand and have ANY sort of impact in the world and the people you interact with you must know how well are you doing regarding your “numbers”.
What do I mean by that?
Although it is key to engage with your fans and show that you care so that they pay attention whenever you want them to click on your post and head over to your YouTube channel, getting to know your actual (overall) numbers is also really important.
Things like retweets, likes, comments, number of followers and the evolution you´ve experienced over time in order to make an informed decision to what to do next is crucial.
You should take the time to measure the performance of your posts, how many clicks you get form each link you put out, and how people are interacting with you content on a daily basis.
As a result, you´ll be able to tweak and optimize everything in order to meet the needs of your audience and maximize your growth as much as possible.
Here´s what to do:
Head over to your Twitter Analytics and start going through the numbers.
You can easily measure the interests of your audience in order to tailor your content accordingly, schedule your tweets based on your fan’s location, and replicate key characteristics of your most popular Tweets, among other things.
6. Grow Your Audience
Another simple yet effective way to promote your YouTube videos is to simply grow your Twitter community!
I know, I know, thanks captain obvious, but hear me out.
The online world is a numbers game, the more followers the more chances of getting discovered and the further your reach will be, right?
WRONG!
It IS a numbers game, but the real numbers are the ones that measure the engagement of your audience, not the number of followers you have.
People tend to underestimate the power of word-of-mouth marketing and the effect that sharing actual GOOD content online has nowadays.
There are a lot of newbie enterpeneurs being born evey single day, but the truth is that just a few of them will succeed, and here´s why.
They put out high-quality content, they focus on providing value to the viewers they have, and they really understand what does that actually means for their brand.
You have to think long term, build a reputation, work and grind and get better with time.
Effective Twitter Strategies
- Host Twitter Chats. As I´ve mentioned before, one of the best ways to engage and grow an audience is to host your own twitter chats. You just have to choose a day and time that most of your audience is available, decide on a clear hashtag, and come up with a relevant topic to talk about.
- Pin Tweets To Boost Content. If you have a super cool Tweet you want all of your followers to see then it is a good idea to pin your post on the top of your feed. It´s a great way to get a message across and/or get people´s attention by using your most effective posts.
- Tweet At The Best Time. Finally, you should be aware of what are the peak times of the day to post so that you can choose different times for different posts throughout the next 24 hours. Why? simply because not every Tweet is the same, if you want your videos to be seen then you NEED to know exactly when to post them.
7. True Cross-Promotion
Last but not least, let´s share some of the most popular tactics top creators in the industry use to cross promote different platforms.
It´s not enough to simply share your link and hope for the best, you need to develop effective strategies that work and take advantage of how people interact across social media.
For example, you can offer exclusivity on your Twitter account, whether that means your fans get direct access to you, or you upload up to date content and news, or whatever it may be.
The goal is to offer something unique on Twitter in order to get people´s attention and then use that to promote your YouTube channel.
Another common strategy most YouTubers use is building an email list.
You should try to integrate email into your social media posts by uploading a newsletter sing up offer that they cannot resist.
How?
You simply use what is called a “lead magnet”, a piece of FREE content that they´ll get if they sign up.
It can be a cool infographic, a video, or a PDF, it doesn´t matter as long as it provides some value to your audience.
Then you can funnel people to your YouTube videos.
I know, it takes more work and time to do it this way but if you simply post your video link into your next tweet, like everyone else does, you´ll get what everyone else gets, ZERO results.
